A Student Midwife's Journal

Practical. Pink. Full of possibility. đź©·

During my doula training, a cross-country move meant I learned in a wide range of settings — hospitals, homes, and birth centers with doctors, midwives, and family physicians. I didn’t set out to learn that way. It’s simply how my path unfolded. I lean into the unexpected paths and ways I’ve been shaped more than the paths I am “supposed to” follow.

The learning across different places and spaces, alongside different care providers and communities, shaped how I understand birthwork. It became foundational. Those experiences didn’t just inform my training, they shaped my values and the kind of care I’m committed to ensuring every family receives both in policy and in practice.

As I move through midwifery training, I want my learning to reflect that same depth but this time by choice and with intention. I want it to be shaped through a wide range of communities and perspectives of different providers, rather than formed in a single setting.

Supporting that kind of learning takes real-life planning and a whole lot of support! Enter – the Pink Unicorn’s Bump! My Jeep (otherwise known as my Pink Unicorn) and my travel camper (Bump). It’s practical. It’s full of joy. And it’s also part of how I’m building a learning path that makes it possible to travel during my clinicals in a wide range of community settings.

I’m aware that being able to approach training this way reflects real privilege. I don’t take that lightly. This flexibility and mobility carry responsibility to listen carefully, to move with humility, and to remain accountable to the communities I’m learning alongside.

That’s the balance I’m holding as I continue with intention and joy.
